TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe in an educational experience that caters to the daily needs of students in my classroom. While my expectations for maintaining a safe classroom community will never falter, I believe in working with what is actually happening in the room. If theatre has taught me anything over the years it’s that if you approach an objective with collaboration and group support, you will find endless ways to solve problems and succeed. I strive to be flexible and make adjustments so that the entire group is able to arrive at an objective, not just a select few. When material is personalized to the interests and needs of each group of students, the experience is long lasting and character shaping.

Theatre is a powerful tool for students to express themselves and gain confidence in their abilities. It has the unique quality of establishing an environment where students can make personal connections between their education and lived experiences beyond the walls of a school building. I believe that educators should use every approach they can to support the development of students into independent thinkers, active community members, and agents for change. I will always maintain high expectations for my students, but I will also meet them where they are and guide them through an educational experience that will make a lasting impact.
